"Dog Walks Near Me" Is the UK's Top Dog-Walk Search. The App Ranking #1 for It Hasn't Been Updated Since 2021, and 21 New Dog-Walk Apps Share 23 Ratings
Type "dog walks" into the UK App Store and the first suggestion is "dog walks near me". The app ranking #1 for that phrase is called Dog Walks. It's a catalogue of 500 countryside walks in England from a publisher of walking guidebooks, priced at £5.99 a year, and it was last updated in December 2021. Each walk comes with directions to the nearest car park. Most dog walks in Britain start at someone's front door, twice a day, on the same three streets.
That gap is the idea in this post. It comes from the random-destination niche we looked at earlier today. Dokoka showed that "walk somewhere you've never been" works as a product. It also showed that almost nobody searches for "random walk". Dog owners already walk every day and already search for new walks. The random mechanic fits that existing habit better than it fits anything on its own.
Why the UK, and not Japan, Korea or the US
| Country | Autocomplete for the dog-walk seed | Who's already there | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇬🇧 UK | "dog walks near me" first, plus "dog walking routes" and "dog walks" | Dog Walks (395 ratings, last update 2021) and Go Jauntly (3,003 ratings, general walking) | Launch here |
| 🇺🇸 US | Mostly trackers and hiring a walker: "dog walking jobs", "wag dog walker", "rover dog sitting" | Rover and Wag own the intent. Dog Walks is #1 for "dog walks near me" with 0 US ratings | Second market. People search the web for walks, not the App Store |
| 🇯🇵 Japan | Only 4 suggestions for 犬 散歩: temperature, matching, a weather app | Dokoka already owns random walks | Skip |
| 🇰🇷 Korea | 10 suggestions for 강아지 산책, most of them app names: a neighbourhood map, a walk diary, a territory game, a walk-friends app, a weather app | Many indie dog-walk apps already | Crowded, skip |
The UK is the only market where the App Store suggests searching for where to walk the dog. In the US, the same seed points to who walks the dog: jobs, sitters, Rover and Wag. Google Trends shows Americans do search for "dog walks near me", but on the web, and that interest swings with the seasons. Japan's random-walk niche already has Dokoka. Korea's dog-walk search is full of indie apps that got there first.
Where this idea comes from: walking is big in UK Health & Fitness, dog walking isn't there yet
The UK top-free Health & Fitness chart has walking all over it. AllTrails is #2, Strava #3, StepsApp #11, WeWard #17, Paace #19 and Scrambly #22, with Macadam, StepUp, Stompers, Sweatcoin and Pedometer++ further down. That's 11 of the top 100 with walking, steps or trails in their name. None of them is about dogs. Pulse's read of the chart: 59% of the apps are more than five years old, 81% are rated below 4.8, and the top 10% take 59% of the audience. The big names are old, and a new walking app with a clear angle can still break in. Scrambly launched in 2026 and is already #22.
Google Trends: steady demand, unlike randonautica
Weekly UK Google Trends, May 3 to October 11, 2026. Both terms come from one request, so they share a 0–100 scale. Weeks with no value for "randonautica" are left as gaps.
"Dog walks near me" never dropped below 21 in five months and peaked at 47 in mid-August. Randonautica, the best-known random-destination app, peaked at 21 in May and was at 3 by October. People walk their dogs in October too. That steady curve is the main reason this idea pairs the random mechanic with dogs instead of selling randomness by itself.
The rising related queries also suggest features. "Dog walks near me with cafe" is up 120%, "dry dog walks near me" is up 100%, and "dog field near me" is up 130%. People want a walk that ends somewhere, and in Britain, one that won't leave the dog covered in mud. "Dog walking routes" itself is tiny on Google (3–7), so the App Store autocomplete is the better evidence for that phrase.
What's already on the market
| App | UK ratings | What it does | What it doesn't do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog Walks (Countryside Books, 2020) | 395 · 4.32★ | 500 hand-picked countryside walks in England, £5.99/year | Daily walks from home, anything outside England, updates since 2021 |
| Go Jauntly (2017) | 3,003 · 4.61★ | Curated photo walks plus generated "Green Routes", with a dog-friendly filter. Amble Anywhere is in premium | Isn't built around dogs or daily novelty. Rated 17+ |
| DOGES, Walky, WalkMyDoggo, PawTrail and others (2025–26) | 0–4 each | Log the walk: distance, time, map of where you went | Suggest where to go next |
| Dokoka (Japan, 2026) | 0 in UK | Arrow to a random point, walk records | Dogs, loops back home, UK search presence |
The tracker wave is the warning sign. In the UK results for "dog walking routes" and "dog walks near me" we counted 21 dog-walk apps launched in 2025–2026, with 23 UK ratings between them. Most of them do the same thing: record the walk after it happens. A dog owner doesn't need help remembering that they walked around the block. They need a reason to walk a different block.
Search evidence: the cluster is real and the ranks are open
| Keyword (UK) | App Store autocomplete | Dog Walks | Go Jauntly |
|---|---|---|---|
| dog walks near me | Yes, first suggestion for "dog walks" | #1 | #2 |
| dog walks | Yes | #1 | #3 |
| dog walking routes | Yes | #1 | #6 |
| dog friendly walks | not in the top suggestions | #1 | #11 |
| walks near me | not checked | #4 | #3 |
| dog walk tracker | Yes ("dog walking tracker") | Not indexed | not checked |
| random walk | Only app titles | #144 | #18 |
Two incumbents hold the top of the list, but the ranks below them are reachable. In the "dog walking routes" search, #2 is Walky, a 2026 tracker with 1 rating. #3 is a 2026 dog-park finder with none. When a 1-rating app sits at #2, an app with a name that matches the search and a steady trickle of ratings can get into the top three within weeks.
The pitch
Positioning: "A new walk for your dog every day, starting from your door." It's not a route catalogue and not a tracker. The app tells you where to go today.
- Surprise loop. Pick 15, 30 or 45 minutes. The app builds a loop from home and doesn't show the whole route in advance, just the next turn or an arrow, the way Dokoka does. Use Apple MapKit walking directions, so there's no paid routing API
- Somewhere new to sniff. The app remembers which streets you walked in the last two weeks and avoids them. This is the core feature. A tracker records repetition, and this app is built to break it
- A finish point. Optionally end at a park, green space or dog-friendly café, found through Apple's local search. That answers the rising "with cafe" and "dog field" searches
- Dry-walk mode. When it's raining, prefer pavements and paths over grass. That answers "dry dog walks near me"
- A map that fills in. Your neighbourhood fills in, street by street, as you walk it, with a "% of your area explored" figure. Sidequest and Sidewalk keep users coming back this way
Audience: UK dog owners who walk the dog daily from home in a town or suburb. They're not the weekend countryside walkers Dog Walks already serves. Go Jauntly's dog-friendly filter and Dog Walks' £5.99/year subscription both show this audience exists and will pay something.
ASO from day 1
- Name:
<Brand>: Dog Walks Near Me. The exact top autocomplete phrase goes in the title, the field that counts most in search. Avoid "Sniff" in the brand: "sniff - dog walks companion" already shows up in autocomplete - Subtitle:
New dog walking routes daily. It covers "dog walking routes" and "dog walks" without repeating title words - Keyword field: friendly, walk, loop, route, park, explore, surprise, random, puppy, walkies
- Screenshot 1: "Your dog has walked this street 40 times. Here's one it hasn't." Put the habit-breaking idea first, before the map
Why it might not work
- Go Jauntly could add it. It already generates routes, has a dog filter, and has 3,003 ratings. Your edge is focus: one tap to start, dogs only, daily habit. A general walking app is unlikely to rebuild itself around that
- Suburban street grids are limited. After a month, a 30-minute radius runs out of truly new streets. Plan for "least recently walked" rather than "never walked", and make the map-filling progress the reward
- The search pool is small. Ranking #2 for "dog walks near me" probably means hundreds of searchers a month, not tens of thousands. You'll still need posts in local dog-owner groups and short videos to grow
- The gold rush is real. 21 new dog-walk apps in two years, 23 ratings between them. If you ship another tracker with a random button bolted on, you'll be number 22
Verdict: build, but only the narrow version
Build it for the UK, iPhone first, English only, around one idea: a new walk from home every day. Don't build a route catalogue, which is Dog Walks' territory, or a tracker, where 21 apps are already stuck. Leave out social features, leaderboards and dog profiles beyond a name. The steady UK search demand, an incumbent with no updates since 2021, and 1-rating apps at #2 for the target phrase make this one of the clearer openings in the walking category. If it takes off in the UK, add a US listing and aim it at web searches like "dog walks near me" through a landing page, not App Store search.
Validate before you write code
- Run
check_search_rankon Dog Walks and Go Jauntly for your exact title phrase. If either has shipped an update aimed at it, rethink the name - Prototype the loop generator for your own neighbourhood and walk it for a week. If day 5 already feels repetitive, change the route logic before you build anything else
- Post a mock-up in two or three local dog-owner groups and count who asks "where do I get it?"
- Run
get_keywordson "dog walks" once a month after launch. If "dog walks near me" drops out of the top suggestions, demand has moved - Decide on pricing early. £5.99/year is what the incumbent charges. A free daily walk with a paid filled-in map and dry-walk mode fits the "free first" lesson from Dokoka
Data pulled from the live App Store in the UK, US, Japan and Korea (charts, search, search rank, autocomplete, app details) and from Google Trends via Pumf.it on October 18, 2026. Rating counts are per-country App Store ratings. The count of 21 dog-walk apps launched in 2025–2026 comes from the UK "dog walking routes" and "dog walks near me" searches, keeping only apps built for dog walking (not general route planners, GPS collars or games); it's a representative sample, not a full census. "Dog walks near me" and "randonautica" share one UK Google Trends request and scale; US figures come from a separate request. Google Trends uses a rolling window. Search-volume estimates in the risks section are a judgement, not measured data. This is a read of public store data to sketch an app idea, not a critique of any app or developer named above.
