A Free Japanese "Walk by Arrow" App Passed Randonautica's Japanese Rating Count in Five Months. In the US and UK, It's #113 and #134 for "Random Walk"
Dokoka gives you a random destination and shows you only an arrow and a distance. You don't see a map or the name of the place. You find out where you were going when you get there. It's free, it has no ads, and it comes from one developer in Japan. It came out in spring 2026, and five months later it has 371 Japanese ratings at 4.76★. Randonautica, the app that made "go to a random point" famous in 2020, has 235 ratings in Japan.
In English, Dokoka barely shows up. It's #113 for "random walk" in the US, #134 in the UK, and not in the top 200 in Germany. Randonautica is #1 for "random location" in all five countries we checked, including Japan and Korea, with a rating between 3.2 and 3.7. So one country has a new winner, and the rest of the world still has an old leader that a lot of its users don't like. This post looks at whether that leaves room for a new app, and in which country.
What this niche is, and what it isn't
"Random destination" apps pick a point near you and send you there. The whole product is the surprise. Dokoka shows an arrow. Randonautica describes its coordinates as "quantum random" and asks you to "set your intention". Sidequest lets you pick a mood (Nature, Food, Hidden Gems) and roll a die.
Two nearby categories get mixed up with it. Step counters and walk-to-earn apps (トリマ, WalkPay, Macadam) pay you or give you points for walking. They don't care where you go. Route generators ("loop route", 散歩ルート) plan a path for you, which is the opposite of a surprise. Both have much more search demand. Both are also much more crowded, so the numbers below cover random destinations only.
Demand check: the search box doesn't know this niche exists
| Seed (store) | App Store autocomplete | Google Trends | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| random walk (US) | Only 4 suggestions, all of them app titles ("random walk compass", "scatter - random walks") | "random walk app": 2–6 in spring, 0 in October | Winning an empty room |
| random destination (US) | "random destination wherewalk", then 29 drifting-game and Rover suggestions | not checked separately | Winning an empty room |
| randonaut (US) | "randonautica", "randonautica free", "randonauting", plus two clone titles | "randonautica" 4–13 since May | Brand demand for one app, not for the category |
| 散歩 / walk (JP) | 散歩アプリ, 散歩で日本一周, 散歩ビンゴ, 散歩コース, 散歩ルート, 散歩ゲーム, 散歩記録 | "散歩 アプリ" 24–57 most weeks, peak in mid-June | Real demand for walking apps in general |
| ランダム / random (JP) | Random chat, random dice, random video call. Nothing about walking | "ランダム散歩" 1 in October | The "random" angle has no search demand |
| 산책 / walk (KR) | 강아지 산책 (dog walk), 산책어플, 산책기록, 산책알바, 산책빙고 | Too sparse to read | Real demand, and most of it is about dog walking |
That table tells you how people find apps like this: they don't search for the concept. In Japan, Dokoka gets traffic from the generic walking term and from people who already know its name. In English-speaking markets, the only search with any volume is "randonautica" itself.
Japanese Google Trends shows where Dokoka's users came from. In a single request with the generic "散歩 アプリ" (walking app), the brand name "dokoka" reached 38 in early June. That's a lot of people searching for one indie app by name. By October it was down to 3–5. That curve looks like a social-media wave, not steady search demand.
Weekly Google Trends for "randonautica", May 10 to October 11, 2026. Each line is normalized to its own country's peak (0–100), so the lines show shape and direction, not which country searches more. Weeks Google returned no value for are left as gaps.
The UK line shows the same pattern: spikes in May and late July, then a fade to 8–9. In Germany, "randonautica" peaked in July 2023 and now sits at 3–5 on that scale. The rising related queries are worth reading. In the UK they include "randonautica codes", "is randonautica free" and "randonautica murders". In Germany, "is randonautica safe" is up 300%. A lot of the remaining interest is people asking whether the app is safe.
Competitive landscape: one old leader, one new local winner, many clones
| App | Launched | Home market | Rating | Ratings | Model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Randonautica | 2020 | US | 3.54 | 13,159 (US) | Free, 17+, English only |
| Randonauting Location Around | 2020 | US | 4.45 | 5K (US) | Free |
| Randonauting Adventure Around | 2022 | US | 4.29 | 332 (US) | Free |
| Dokoka | 2026 | Japan | 4.76 | 371 (JP) | Free, no ads, 4+, EN/JA/KO/ZH |
| Sidequest: Explore Your City | 2026 | US | 4.36 | 214 (US) | Subscription, added a free version |
| ランダム散歩ナビ Wherewalk | 2026 | Japan | 4.2 | 10 (JP) | ¥300 paid |
Two things stand out. Randonautica's rating is low everywhere: 3.54 in the US, 3.68 in the UK, 3.17 in Germany, 3.30 in Japan and 3.36 in Korea. Its listing is English only and rated 17+, and its description promises to "break the matrix" and "open a real world portal". Some people want exactly that. Dokoka shows that many others want the same walk without the mysticism.
The other is Wherewalk. It has the same mechanic as Dokoka (a hidden destination, revealed when you arrive) and launched in the same market a few months earlier, but costs ¥300. It has 10 ratings. Dokoka is free and has 371. People in this niche haven't shown they'll pay for the mechanic on its own.
Gold-rush check
We pulled the US results for "random walk" and "randonautica" and kept only the apps that actually send you to a random point or generate a surprise route. That left 19 apps. Eight of them launched in 2025 or 2026: Random Walk Compass, Random Walk: Loop Routes, RandomWalk, Mystery Walk, Random Compass, Random Run, RoundWalker and Sidequest. Together they have 215 US ratings, and 214 of them belong to Sidequest. The other seven have 1 rating between them.
Korea has the same pattern on a smaller scale. The #1 result for "랜덤 산책" (random walk) is a 2026 app called 랜덤 산책 - 화살표 탐험 ("random walk, arrow exploration"). It has the same arrow idea as Dokoka and no ratings yet. Dokoka is #3 for that term in Korea, also with 0 Korean ratings, even though its listing is fully translated into Korean.
The one 2026 launch that escaped the noise in the US, Sidequest, didn't do it with randomness alone. It added a fog-of-war map that clears as you walk, a daily feed of places, saved spots with ratings, and friends. The random destination is just the way in.
Country by country: chart vs search
| Country | Who owns "random" search | Leader in chart? | Dokoka here | Local-language niche |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇯🇵 Japan | Randonautica #1 for "random location", #10 for "random destination" | Dokoka isn't in the top 100 Health & Fitness | #2 for 散歩, 散歩アプリ, 散歩ナビ. #5 for ランダム散歩. Not in the top 200 for 散歩ルート | Taken by Dokoka. Wherewalk and ekitabi trail far behind |
| 🇰🇷 Korea | Randonautica #1 for "random location" and "random destination" | not checked | #3 for 랜덤 산책, #125 for 산책 앱, 0 ratings | Open, but thin. A local arrow clone already exists |
| 🇺🇸 US | Randonautica #1 for "random destination", "random location", "randonauting" | Randonautica #37 in Navigation top-free | #113 for "random walk", #41 for "random destination" | Brand search only |
| 🇬🇧 UK | Randonautica #1 for the same terms, #1 for "random adventure" | Randonautica #35 in Navigation top-free | #134 for "random walk", #101 for "random destination", 0 ratings | Brand search only, with interest fading |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | Randonautica #1 for "random location", #2 for "random destination" | not checked | Not in the top 200 for any term we checked | "zufälliger Spaziergang" returns one app with one rating |
Randonautica still being in the Navigation top 40 in the US and UK matters. It means people keep downloading a six-year-old app with a 3.5★ rating, and most of them arrive by typing its name. Nobody has built a calmer, better-rated alternative that English search can find.
Dokoka's Android version (released May 6, 2026) adds context. Google Play shows 17K installs worldwide and 99 ratings, and it's #1 for "ランダム 散歩" on Japanese Google Play. That's healthy for a free app from one developer. It's also roughly the ceiling of a viral wave in one country.
The gaps nobody has closed
1. A 4+, well-rated random walk in English. In English the niche has a 3.5★, 17+ incumbent, a growing number of "is it safe" searches, and no alternative people can find in search. Dokoka has the right product but no English search presence: it isn't in the top 200 for "randonauting", "random adventure" or "mystery walk" anywhere we checked. What's missing is positioning: a safe, family-friendly walk to a surprise destination, rated 4+, in the listing language of each market.
2. Walking bingo in Japan and Korea. "散歩ビンゴ" and "산책빙고" (walking bingo) both appear in autocomplete for the plain "walk" seed. In Japan, the top results are two 2023 apps with 3 and 1 ratings and three 2026 apps with 0–2. In Korea, the #1 result is a 2026 app called 산책빙고 with no ratings. Be careful with this one: both phrases are also app titles, so part of the autocomplete may come from people searching those titles. It's a signal to check, not proof of demand.
3. Random walks for dog owners in Korea. The top suggestion for 산책 in Korea is 강아지 산책 (dog walk). Two more suggestions are titles of dog-walking map apps. No random-destination app targets dog owners, even though they walk every day and get bored of the same route. This is a hypothesis built from autocomplete. We haven't measured it beyond that.
Verdict
Japan: don't build. Dokoka owns the walking terms that matter, is free with no ads, and already has a direct paid competitor at 10 ratings. Another arrow app would be fighting for a wave that has already peaked.
US and UK: build only with a reason to keep using the app. The incumbent is weak, but "random walk" and "random destination" don't bring search traffic, and seven of the eight 2025–2026 launches have 1 rating between them. If you build here, the random destination should be the way in. What keeps people should be a map that fills in, a collection, or friends, like Sidequest. Plan to get users from video and social posts, not from App Store search.
Korea: only as a localization of an app you already have. The demand that's there is about dogs, records and bingo, not randomness, and an arrow clone already holds #1 for 랜덤 산책.
Germany: skip as a launch market. Interest in "randonautica" is a fraction of its 2023 peak, and the German phrase returns one app with one rating. A German listing is cheap to add later, and people do search "randonautica deutsch", but it won't carry a launch.
Before you build a random-destination app
- Run
get_keywordson your seed in each target country. If autocomplete only shows app titles, plan your launch around social media, because search won't bring users - Run
check_search_rankon Randonautica for "random location", "random destination" and "random adventure" in your markets. It's #1–3 on most of them, so pick other terms - Decide what people come back for after the first surprise (a map that fills in, records, a daily shared destination, friends) before you build the arrow
- Rate it 4+ and say plainly in the listing that it avoids private property and unsafe places. "Is randonautica safe" is a growing search, so a safety message is part of how you stand out
- Don't charge for the mechanic alone. The ¥300 version of the same idea has 10 ratings, and the free one has 371
Data pulled from the live App Store in Japan, Korea, the US, the UK and Germany (search, search rank, top-free charts, autocomplete, app details), from Google Play Japan, and from Google Trends via Pumf.it on October 18, 2026. Rating counts are per-country App Store ratings; Dokoka's Google Play figures (17K installs, 99 ratings) are global store counters. The US gold-rush count (19 apps, 8 launched in 2025–2026) comes from the "random walk" and "randonautica" searches, keeping only random-destination or surprise-route apps; it's a representative sample, not a full census. Google Trends values are normalized within each request and each country, so values from different countries aren't on a shared scale; "dokoka" and "散歩 アプリ" came from one Japanese request and share a scale. Weeks with no Google Trends value are omitted. This is a read of public store data to help someone decide whether to build in this niche, not a critique of any app or developer named above.
