The Newest Runner in Google Play's Top 10 Isn't in the Top 30 for "Running Game" Anywhere. It's #1 for "Sled Game" in All Three Countries
Sled Surfers launched on April 29, 2025. Seventeen months later it sits at #5 in the US Arcade top-free chart on Google Play and #5 in Brazil. It's #11 in India. It has 22.6 million installs, and it's the only runner launched in the last three years that shows up near the top of both the download chart and the revenue chart.
Search "running game" or "runner game" on Google Play in any of those three countries and it isn't in the top 30. What it does own is "sled game": #1 in the US, India, and Brazil. That's the shape of this whole genre on Android right now. Almost nobody can win the genre word, and the few new games that broke in did it with a theme word.
Why you can't just open "runners" in a category chart
Google Play has no runner category. Runners sit inside Arcade next to space shooters, cooking games, claw machines, and Minecraft clones, and a few spill into Action and Casual. So the usual move of opening a category and reading the chart doesn't work for a game sub-genre. You have to count it by hand.
We read the Arcade top-free chart in the US, India, and Brazil and counted every game whose core loop is moving forward on its own while the player dodges, jumps, or switches lanes. That covers classic endless runners like Subway Surfers and Temple Run, auto-runner platformers like Geometry Dash and Vector, and the newer "run and collect" hyper-casual titles. Games that only have "run" in the name, like a stealth game called Schoolboy Runaway, didn't count.
One more limit worth knowing before the search tables: Google Play only shows the top 30 results for a search, so a blank in our tables means "not in the top 30", not "not indexed at all".
A sixth of every chart, mostly from 2011-2017
| Country | Runners in Arcade top-100 free | Highest-ranked | Newest in the chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๐บ๐ธ US | 17 | Sled Surfers #5, Geometry Dash Lite #6, Subway Surfers #7 | Sled Surfers (2025) |
| ๐ฎ๐ณ India | 18 | Subway Princess Runner #1, Subway Surfers #7, Sled Surfers #11 | Sled Surfers (2025) |
| ๐ง๐ท Brazil | 23 | Subway Surfers #2, Sled Surfers #5, Kooply Run #6 | Sled Surfers (2025) |
Demand isn't the problem. "Run" is the second most common word in US Arcade chart titles, in 10% of them, behind only "game", and "dash" is fifth at 5%. The problem is who holds the spots. Subway Surfers launched in 2012 and has 2.9 billion installs. Geometry Dash Lite is from 2013 with 621 million. Sonic Dash, also 2013, has 523 million. Temple Run dates to 2011. Subway Princess Runner, India's #1, launched in 2017 and has 809 million installs.
Between those and Sled Surfers there's Kooply Run from 2022, a runner where players build and share their own levels, at #38 in the US, #12 in India, and #6 in Brazil. Everything else that's new in these charts is hyper-casual "run and collect" from studios like Freeplay, Azur Games, and Voodoo, which ship dozens of titles a year and treat each one as a short-lived bet.
Downloads are easy to find. Revenue isn't
The US Arcade top-grossing chart has 6 runners in its top 100, against 17 in top-free:
| Game | US Arcade top-grossing | Launched |
|---|---|---|
| Sled Surfers | #6 | 2025 |
| Geometry Dash (paid, $3.99) | #20 | 2013 |
| Subway Surfers | #23 | 2012 |
| Sonic Dash Run | #71 | 2013 |
| Crowd Champs: 3D Runner Game | #75 | โ |
| Jetpack Joyride | #89 | 2012 |
The top of that chart belongs to space shooters, cooking games, idle tycoons, and Minecraft. Subway Surfers, the most downloaded runner ever made, earns less in this category than a 2023 restaurant game. A plain endless runner pays through ads, and ads pay little per player. Sled Surfers is the exception: #6 in US revenue, #13 in India's Arcade top-grossing, and #22 in Brazil's. It's a hybrid. The running is the moment-to-moment game, and the money comes from what sits around it.
For anyone building a runner this is the most important number in the piece. With ads alone you need tens of millions of installs to make real money. To earn per player you need meta-progression (upgrades, collections, seasonal content) built in from the first version, not added later.
The genre word belongs to 2017. The theme word is open
We checked where two games rank for the same set of terms: Subway Princess Runner, the 2017 incumbent, and Sled Surfers, the 2025 breakout.
| Keyword | Subway Princess Runner US / IN / BR | Sled Surfers US / IN / BR |
|---|---|---|
| running game | #8 / #2 / #7 | โ / โ / โ |
| runner game | #6 / #1 / #4 | โ / โ / โ |
| endless runner | #10 / #12 / #13 | โ / โ / โ |
| running games offline | #16 / #5 / #14 | not checked |
| sled game | not checked | #1 / #1 / #1 |
| surfers | not checked | #3 / #3 / #5 |
| snow game | not checked | #3 / #13 / #9 |
โ = not in Google Play's visible top 30 for that term.
The 2017 game holds the genre terms everywhere. Sled Surfers holds none of them and reached the top 5 anyway, because players typing "sled game" or "snow game" find it at the top while the generic results are full of 2012-era giants. "Surfers" is a borrowed word. It points straight at Subway Surfers, the most searched runner there is, and puts Sled Surfers at #3 for it.
The same pattern shows up at the other end of the quality range. Little Ram โ Ayodhya Run, a licensed cartoon runner from the Indian publisher Zapak, is #55 in India's Arcade chart. It's #1 for "ram game" and isn't in the top 30 for "running game", "runner game", "running games offline", or "hanuman game".
If you're planning a runner, pick the theme word before you pick the art style. A sled, a cat, a horse, a mythological hero: that's the term you can realistically be #1 for. "Runner game" is the term you'll show up for later, once installs pull you up.
Each country searches for runners in its own words
India: Hinglish, offline, and an animal. Google Play's autocomplete for "running game" in India fills up with phrases typed in Hindi written in Latin letters: "running game bina net wala" (one that works without internet), "daudne wala" and "bhagne wala" (the one where you run), "billi wala" (with the cat), "gadi wala" (with a car), "achcha wala" (a good one), "dikhaiye" (show me). Next to those sit "running game in 50 mb", "running game honey bunny", "running game granny", and "running game in tamil". People want offline play, a small download, a recognizable character, and their own language. None of the Zapak titles we checked rank for the Hinglish phrases.
Brazil: the obvious translation means car racing. In Brazilian Portuguese, "corrida" means both running and racing. Autocomplete for "jogo de corrida" is mostly cars, motorbikes, F1, and horses. The runner phrases are further down: "jogo de corrida infinito" (endless), "jogo de corrida a pรฉ" (on foot), "jogo de corrida humana", "jogo de corrida gato" (cat). If you translate "running game" straight into a Brazilian listing, you're competing with Hot Wheels.
One small detail shows how far ASO has gone in this genre. The same game, package com.happygogame.subwayrushescape, is listed as "Brainrot Subway Rush: Escape" at #63 in India and as "Subway Runner: Parkour Game" at #95 in Brazil. Google Play lets you set a different title for each language, and someone is testing which hook works where.
India's chart has a quality gap
India is where demand for runners is highest and where a lot of the charting supply is weakest. The #1 Arcade game, Subway Princess Runner, holds a 3.97 rating in India against 4.35 in the US. Four Zapak titles, licensed from Indian kids' cartoons and built as runners according to their package names, are in the top 100 with these ratings:
| Game | India Arcade rank | Rating (India) |
|---|---|---|
| Little Krishna | #35 | 3.87 |
| Little Ram โ Ayodhya Run | #55 | 3.53 |
| Little Singham Super Skater | #65 | 3.45 |
| Little Singham | #91 | 3.95 |
Ratings that low on games that still chart mean the characters and the setting are pulling installs that the game itself doesn't keep. That's the most concrete opening in this scan: an offline runner with a local setting, built to run smoothly on a cheap phone, that's simply better made than what Indian players are downloading now. The catch is money. Ad revenue per player in India is a small fraction of the US, so this plan only works at very large install volumes, or as a learning ground before you take the game to richer markets.
What Google Trends says
In the US, search interest for "running games" peaked at 100 in the week of July 12, 2026, the middle of school holidays, and has sat between 20 and 32 since August. "Endless runner", the term developers use, scores 0 to 3 in the same pull. Players don't search for it. They search "running game" plus whatever they actually want.
In India, "subway surfers" scores 55 this week against 6 for "running game" in the same pull, and it has eased from 81 in April. The category is a brand first and a genre second. That's one more reason a new game should win on a theme word and not head-on against the brand.
Verdict
| Angle | Call |
|---|---|
| Classic endless runner, US-first, ads only | Pass. Four of the six top-grossing runners launched in 2012-2013, the genre terms are held, and ad revenue alone doesn't reach the revenue chart. |
| Themed hybrid runner (the Sled Surfers model) | Build. Pick an ownable theme word, ship with meta-progression, and time a seasonal theme to its season. It's October, so winter and Halloween themes can still launch in time. |
| Offline, locally themed runner for India | Build, if you can reach volume. The demand and the quality gap are real, the Hinglish search phrases are open, and revenue per install is low. |
| Brazil localization of an existing runner | Build, carefully. 23 runners in the top 100 show the appetite. Write the listing around "corrida infinita" and "a pรฉ", not plain "jogo de corrida". |
Before you start building
- Pick the theme word first and check autocomplete for it in every country you'll launch in. Sled Surfers' "sled game" is the model: a concrete noun, one game obviously owns it, and the giants don't compete for it
- Don't put "runner" or "running game" in your title for launch week. You won't reach the top 30 for it, and the space works better for the theme word
- Design meta-progression (upgrades, collections, seasons) into the first version. Six runners in the US revenue top 100 is the ceiling for ads alone
- For India: offline play, a download small enough for "in 50 mb" searches, steady frame rate on a budget phone, and Hinglish phrases in your short description
- For Brazil: don't translate "running" as plain "corrida". Check the autocomplete list for runner phrases before you write the title
- Use per-language titles. Google Play lets one package test a different hook in every market
Data pulled from live Google Play charts, Google Play search, and Google Trends via Pumf.it on October 5, 2026. Runner counts are a manual classification of the Arcade top-100 free charts in the US, India, and Brazil by core mechanic, not by title keywords alone; other people may draw the line slightly differently. Google Play search results are only visible to the top 30, so "not in the top 30" doesn't mean a game isn't indexed for a term. Install figures are Google Play's global lifetime counts, not per-country numbers. Google Trends values are relative within each pull and reflect a rolling window. This is a read of public store data meant to help someone deciding whether to build a runner, not a critique of any game or studio named above.
