The Same 100 Slots, Three Different Countries: Ukraine's Top 4 Free iPhone Apps Are Air-Raid Maps, a Quarter of the US Chart Is Entertainment, and the UK's Two Best-Selling Paid Apps Are Driving Theory Tests
On October 16, 2026, a solo developer released КОНТУР, a live map of drones and missiles over Ukraine. Three days later it's #4 in the Ukrainian top-free iPhone chart with 5 ratings. The three apps above it do the same job: air-raid alerts and threat maps. Two of them launched this year, also from individual developers.
Open the US chart on the same day and the top 100 looks like a streaming service: 24 of the free slots belong to Entertainment, and eight of those are short-drama apps. In the UK, the #1 and #2 paid apps are driving theory tests at £5.99 and £5.49. Same store, same 100 slots per chart, and each country fills them with a different life. If you're choosing which market to build for, the category mix of its charts is the quickest way to see what people there actually reach for.
How to read the bars
Every App Store app has one primary category picked by its developer: Shopping, Finance, Games and so on. We took the top 100 of each chart (free, paid, grossing) on the iPhone App Store in Ukraine, the US and the UK on October 19, counted apps per category, and turned the counts into shares. A 24% Entertainment segment means 24 of the 100 apps chose Entertainment. This is the same calculation as the "Top Chart Trends By Categories" bar in Pulse, with one change: here a category keeps the same color in every country, so you can compare bars row against row.
Three things to keep in mind. A share counts apps, not downloads, so the #1 app and the #100 app weigh the same. Categories are self-reported, which matters a lot in Ukraine, as you'll see below. And the charts move: we have daily snapshots since October 16, and some categories swing by several points in four days.
Top free: three countries, three everyday lives

| Category | 🇺🇦 UA | 🇺🇸 US | 🇬🇧 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping | 14% | 17% | 21% |
| Productivity | 11% | 12% | 11% |
| Finance | 10% | 5% | 11% |
| Utilities | 9% | 3% | 5% |
| News | 6% | 2% | 1% |
| Travel | 3% | 3% | 12% |
| Entertainment | 6% | 24% | 7% |
| Everything else | 41% | 34% | 32% |
Shopping is the one thing all three countries agree on. It's #1 in Ukraine (14%) and the UK (21%) and #2 in the US (17%). Productivity sits at 11–12% everywhere too, mostly AI assistants: ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are in all three top-free lists. Past that, the bars split.
The US is the entertainment country. Entertainment takes 24% of the US chart, against 6% in Ukraine and 7% in the UK. The usual streaming brands are there (Netflix, Peacock, Paramount+, Disney+, Prime Video, Tubi), but eight of the 24 apps are short-drama services: PineDrama, DramaWave, ReelShort, BlinkDrama, DramaBox, StoryReel, VibeShort and NetShort. Four of the eight launched in 2025–2026 (PineDrama, BlinkDrama, StoryReel and VibeShort), and PineDrama is #6 overall.
The UK chart is about getting around and eating. Travel takes 12% of the UK top-free, four times its US and Ukrainian share. It isn't holiday booking that does it: RingGo, JustPark and PayByPhone are parking apps, Trainline and TrainPal sell train tickets, and Uber and Bolt are taxis. Food & Drink adds another 8% (Greggs, Too Good To Go, Costa, Starbucks UK, three delivery apps). The UK chart is the one where daily commuting and lunch show up as categories.
Ukraine's chart is about staying safe and getting things delivered. News is 6% in Ukraine and 1–2% elsewhere, and all six Ukrainian News apps are air-raid and threat maps. Finance is 10%, nearly all banks (monobank, Privat24, PUMB, Raiffeisen, Oschadbank and others). Business is 7%, and that's mostly parcel delivery: Nova Post, Ukrposhta and Meest. None of these categories tells you what's going on by itself, which is why the next section matters.
What a category bar hides: Ukraine's safety apps
App Store categories don't map to needs. In Ukraine, one need, knowing what is in the sky right now and getting around when GPS is jammed, is spread across three categories. Here are the ten apps behind it in today's top-free 100:
| # | App | Category | Released | UA ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Повітряна тривога (Ajax Systems) | News | Feb 2022 | 330K |
| 2 | Карта тривог - Dron Alerts | Utilities | Jan 2026 | 14K |
| 3 | Карта тривог - RadarUA | News | Jul 2026 | 11K |
| 4 | КОНТУР - Карта шахедів | Utilities | Oct 16, 2026 | 5 |
| 9 | Мапа тривог віджет (Stfalcon) | News | Feb 2024 | 4K |
| 26 | Орієнтир: навігатор без GPS | Navigation | Oct 9, 2026 | 20 |
| 37 | Флюгер | News | Jul 2025 | 926 |
| 61 | LOST: навігація без GPS | Navigation | Oct 8, 2026 | 15 |
| 69 | Air Alert Radar | News | Aug 2026 | 288 |
| 76 | Neboskhyl: Air Raid Alert Map | News | Oct 1, 2026 | 409 |
Seven of the ten launched in 2026, and all seven come from individual developers, not companies. Four of them were released in the last three weeks and have between 5 and 409 ratings. The US and UK top-free charts have nothing like it: their only 2025–2026 launches with under 5,000 ratings are two brand apps in the UK (Primark and the insurer Sheilas' Wheels) and one short-drama service.
The ranks aren't luck, either. Search shows real demand: App Store autocomplete for "карта тривог" returns ten suggestions, three of them app names, and "навігатор без gps" is a suggestion in its own right. КОНТУР is #1 for its own name, #3 for "карта шахедів" and #7 for "шахеди". Орієнтир is #1 for "навігація без gps" and #2 for "навігатор без gps" after nine days. These are apps that answer a need that appeared recently, with a name that matches what people type.
That's the general lesson for a chart like Ukraine's. If you only looked at the bar, you'd see "News 6%, Utilities 9%, Navigation 4%" and move on. Read the app names inside a segment before you decide a category is boring.
Top paid: Ukraine buys games, the UK buys exams
Show as a table
| Category | 🇺🇦 UA | 🇺🇸 US | 🇬🇧 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Games | 84% | 68% | 52% |
| Education | 2% | 2% | 16% |
| Utilities | 4% | 5% | 2% |
| Medical | 0% | 1% | 4% |
| Everything else | 10% | 24% | 26% |
Games dominate paid charts everywhere, but by very different amounts: 84% in Ukraine, 68% in the US, 52% in the UK. In Ukraine only 16 non-game apps made the paid top 98, and several are there on tiny volume. Truck Queue: Line Alarm, a $0.99 app from 2026, is #77 with 2 ratings. Across the whole Ukrainian paid chart, 47 of 98 apps have fewer than 100 Ukrainian ratings. In the US that number is 8, in the UK 18. A Ukrainian paid rank takes very few sales, which also means it says little about demand.
The UK is the outlier. Education takes 16% of its paid chart, eight times the US and Ukrainian share, and ten of those sixteen apps prepare you for an official exam: two driving theory kits at #1 and #2, the DVSA Highway Code and Hazard Perception apps, Know Your Traffic Signs, the Driver CPC test, two CITB construction-site safety tests, and two Life in the UK citizenship test apps. People pay £3–£15 up front because the exam has a date and a fee, and failing costs more than the app.
That's the most indie-friendly pattern in all nine charts. The official Life in the UK app is #5 with a 3.39 rating. The independent Life in the UK 2026 Test Prep is #80 with 4.75 from 6K ratings, and in search it's #2 for "citizenship test", #4 for "life in uk test 2026" and #5 for "life in the uk". Autocomplete for "life in the uk" leads with "life in the uk test 2026 official", "life in the uk test 2026" and "… free", so the year and the word "official" are what people type. "Theory test" has its own list too: "4 in 1 kit", "pro", "free", "practice", "2026", "uk", "dvla".
Top grossing: where the money is, Ukraine pays for photos

| Health & Fitness | 4% | 5% | 7% |
| Entertainment | 8% | 16% | 13% |
| Everything else | 15% | 25% | 18% |
Grossing is the closest chart to "where people spend". Games again lead (45% in Ukraine, 32–33% in the US and UK), and the second-biggest category is where the countries split.
In Ukraine it's Photo & Video at 17%, nearly double the US and UK. YouTube and Instagram are in every country's top 10, so the gap comes from paid editors: FaceApp, Facetune, Canva, Captions, Verba, Remini, Airbrush, Picsart, Persona, InShot, Lightroom, Meitu and Instories all sit in the Ukrainian grossing 100. In the US, Entertainment is second at 16% (streaming subscriptions: Peacock, Paramount+ and others), and in Ukraine the local streaming apps MEGOGO and SWEET.TV hold that role on a smaller scale, 8%. The UK spreads its money wider: Lifestyle (9%, mostly dating: Tinder and Hinge are in the top 10) and Health & Fitness (7%) are bigger there than anywhere else.
Where the countries differ most
Here are the biggest gaps from all three charts in one place. The "spread" column is the distance between the highest and lowest country.

Four days of trend: which shares are stable and which aren't
A single snapshot can mislead, so we checked the daily category shares Pumf.it has stored since October 16. Grossing charts barely move: US Games stayed at exactly 32% all four days. Free charts move a lot, because one viral app or one weekend shifts several slots at once.
| Chart · category | Oct 16 → 19 | Daily % |
|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 US top-free Entertainment | 18·20·26·24 range 8 pts | |
| 🇺🇦 UA top-free Shopping | 15·16·20·14 range 6 pts | |
| 🇬🇧 GB top-free Entertainment | 7·10·12·7 range 5 pts | |
| 🇺🇸 US top-paid Games | 61·65·68·68 range 7 pts | |
| 🇺🇦 UA top-paid Games | 79·79·78·84 range 6 pts | |
| 🇬🇧 GB top-free Shopping | 21·21·21·21 range 0 pts | |
| 🇺🇸 US top-grossing Games | 32·32·32·32 range 0 pts | |
| 🇺🇦 UA top-grossing Photo & Video | 18·19·19·17 range 2 pts |
US Entertainment went from 18% to 26% in two days and settled at 24%, which is the short-drama apps climbing. UK Entertainment jumped from 7% to 12% and dropped back to 7%. Ukrainian Shopping hit 20% on Saturday and fell to 14% on Sunday. So a gap of 3–4 points between countries in a free chart is noise. The gaps in the table above that are 9 points or more held on all four days, and those are the ones worth building on.
What this means if you're picking a market
| Country | What the chart rewards | Indie angle |
|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇦 Ukraine | Fast, practical tools for a need that changes month to month; local banks and delivery; paid photo editing | The one market here where a new solo app reaches the free top 10 in days. Paid ranks are cheap to get and mean little, so build free with a subscription. Ukrainian and English metadata only |
| 🇺🇸 United States | Entertainment, especially short video drama; shopping; AI assistants | Short drama needs a content budget, so it's not an indie category. The US paid chart is 68% games, so a paid utility competes with fewer apps than you'd think, but against bigger studios |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | Commuting, parking, food, and paid exam prep | The clearest opening: official tests with a date and a fee, where the official app rates 3.4 and searches include the year. Upfront price works here |
Before you choose a country
- Open the Pulse for your target country on all three charts, not just top-free. Paid and grossing tell you what people spend on, and they differ more between countries than the free chart does
- Click into any category that's bigger in one country than the others and read the app names. A "News" or "Education" segment can be one specific need in disguise
- Check the category for at least a few days before deciding. A gap of 3–4 points in a free chart can disappear by Monday
- Count the release years inside the segment. Seven 2026 apps from solo developers in Ukraine's safety cluster is a sign the door is open. A segment of 2010–2015 brands isn't
- In a country with a cheap paid chart (Ukraine: 47 of 98 apps under 100 ratings), don't take a paid rank as proof of demand. Check autocomplete for your main keyword first
- Put the words people type into your title: the year and "test" for UK exam apps, "без gps" for Ukrainian navigation, "short drama" for US video
Data pulled from the live iPhone App Store top-free, top-paid and top-grossing charts (top 100 each) in Ukraine, the United States and the United Kingdom, plus App Store search and autocomplete, via Pumf.it on October 19, 2026. Category shares count apps by their primary App Store category, not downloads or revenue; paid charts held 97–99 apps on the day, and shares are rounded. Apple's top-free feed contains no games in these countries. Daily trend values come from Pumf.it's stored chart snapshots for October 16–19, 2026; four days is a short window, so treat the trend as a check on stability, not a forecast. The Ukrainian safety-app grouping was made by hand from app names and descriptions. Charts change every few hours. This is a read of public App Store data meant to help developers choose a market, not a critique of any app or developer named above.
