A Solo Developer's Engine-Sound Toy Reached the US Top 100 in Three Months. 15 Fun, Offline App Ideas for the US, Ukraine and Europe, Each Checked Against Live Data
Engine Sim does one thing. You drag a finger across the screen and an engine revs, one of 21, from a 660cc kei-car turbo to a racing V10 that screams to 19,000 rpm. Sena Takasawa, a solo developer, released it on July 15, 2026. Three months later it's #79 in the US top-free Entertainment chart with 725 ratings and the #1 App Store result for "engine sounds". It has no account, no server and no API.
We went looking for more apps like that: fun, offline, with no third-party integrations, and small enough to build with an AI coding assistant in a few weekends. On October 17, 2026 we pulled the top-free and top-paid Entertainment charts for the US, Ukraine, Germany, France and Italy, found the small apps that made it in, and checked each idea against App Store autocomplete, a live search sample and Google Trends. Each idea below comes with the numbers for it and the numbers against it.
How we picked the ideas
Every idea had to pass three tests:
- It's fun. Toys, party games, collector tools, novelty apps. No productivity.
- It runs entirely on the phone. No external API, no backend, no sign-in. Apple's own frameworks (audio, haptics, widgets, speech, local networking) and Apple's in-app purchases are allowed.
- The data shows a way in. Either a small or recent app is already in a top-100 chart, or the App Store suggests a search phrase that the current leaders don't rank for.
A few terms used below. Autocomplete means the suggestions the App Store shows while you type; they're based on what people actually search for. "X / Y" for launches means: of the roughly 45–50 apps the App Store returns for the search, X launched in 2025 or 2026, and together they have Y ratings. Many launches with few ratings is a gold rush: lots of developers had the idea, and nobody has won yet. An empty room is when an app ranks #1 for a phrase nobody actually types. It looks like success but brings no downloads.

United States
The US Entertainment charts are full of AI chat apps and short-drama streaming apps backed by big budgets. The top-paid chart is different. It's full of small, single-purpose apps that people buy because they do one thing: a sound toy, a ghost detector, a buzzer. Four of our five US ideas come from that chart.
1. An engine sound toy, but for one kind of engine
Engine Sim is the hook of this whole article. It's a sound toy: drag your finger and the engine revs. There's no backend, no login, nothing to sync. The developer lists 21 engines, and that's the product. It reached the chart in three months, and it owns the generic search terms: #1 for engine sounds in the US, #4 for engine simulator in the UK.
The search sample says the category is busy but not won. Of the 47 results for "engine sounds", 17 launched in 2025 or 2026. Engine Sim has 725 ratings. The other 16 have 174 between them. Interest is growing slowly rather than spiking: Google Trends for "engine sound" in the US went from 29 five years ago to 56 now. Engine Sim also shows that the generic terms are now taken, so a new app has to pick a narrower angle.
MVP, no integrations:
- One engine family done properly: motorcycles, or JDM four-cylinders, or V8 muscle cars. 8–10 engines, not 21
- Throttle by drag, gear shifts, a rev limiter that bounces, Core Haptics on the bounce
- Record a 10-second clip to share as audio or video (native share sheet, no SDK)
- One-time unlock for the full garage instead of a subscription
ASO from day one: autocomplete for "engine sounds" includes engine sounds-car moto effects and engine sounds & revs. A motorcycle version can target motorcycle sounds and bike rev without fighting Engine Sim for its #1. Check those terms in the keyword tool before naming the app.
Why it might not work: Sound quality is the whole product. Synthesized engines sound cheap, and recordings need to be ones you're allowed to use. Engine Sim also shows the gap between first place and everyone else: the 16 other recent apps average about 11 ratings each.
Verdict: build, but only for one engine type that Engine Sim covers thinly.
2. A paid ghost-hunting kit
This is the strongest paid signal in our sample. Six of the US top-100 paid Entertainment apps are ghost-hunting tools: Ghost Science M3 ($10.99, #3), Spirit Contact Talker ($7.99, #11), Spirit Box Radio ($7.99, #22), Ghost Hunter M2 ($7.99, #34), Ghost EVP Recorder ($4.99, #55, launched in 2026) and Ghost EVP Radio ($4.99, #99). Three of them come from one developer, Michael Weber. In Italy the #1 paid Entertainment app is Ghost Finder Pro at €14.99, from solo developer Paolo Dematteis, with 82 ratings.
These apps aren't in the paid chart because of search. Ghost Science M3 is #69 for spirit box, #56 for ghost detector, and outside the top 200 for evp recorder. Buyers come from ghost-hunting YouTube and TikTok, where these apps show up on screen. Interest is stable and seasonal: "spirit box" in US Google Trends is 34 now and was 32 five years ago, and October is its peak each year. The related queries include "phasmophobia spirit box", so the video game sends people searching for this too.
MVP, no integrations:
- A "spirit box" radio sweep built from noise and short audio fragments, with adjustable sweep speed
- An EMF meter animation driven by the magnetometer (Core Motion gives you real readings to visualize)
- An EVP recorder with reverse playback and a spectrogram view, all on device
- A clear "for entertainment" line in the description, which Apple expects for this kind of app
ASO from day one: free autocomplete is full of spirit box free and spirit box talk to ghost. That traffic goes to free apps. A paid app should go after spirit box evp and ghost box and rely on video for the rest. Localizing into Italian is cheap: 18 of 43 Italian "spirit box" results launched in 2025–26, and together they have 21 ratings.
Why it might not work: Free search is a gold rush: 22 of 48 US "spirit box" results launched in 2025–26. The paid leaders have years of reviews and YouTube presence. If you don't plan to make short videos of the app in use, you won't reach the paid chart.
Verdict: build as a paid app, launch with video content, and add Italian on day one.
3. A squishy collection tracker for the holiday season
needoh tracker in App Store autocomplete for "needoh"NeeDoh squishies went from nothing to a craze in 2026. Google Trends for "needoh" in the US was 1–2 for most of 2025, hit 100 in late March 2026 and is still at 46. When you type "needoh" in the App Store, the first suggestion is needoh tracker and the fifth is needoh collector. Collectors want a list of what they own and what they're still hunting for.
Six trackers launched in 2026 (Squish Stash & Wish, NeeDoh Collector, SquishDex, All Things Squishy, Dumpling Dex, SquishHub), and they have 21 ratings combined. The best of them, Squish Stash & Wish, ranks #4 for needoh tracker and #2 for needoh collector with 12 ratings. A paid tracker with zero ratings is in the paid chart. Nobody has won this yet. Google's rising related queries are needoh advent and needoh calendar, so the next wave of demand arrives in December.
MVP, no integrations:
- A built-in catalog as a JSON file in the app bundle: name, photo you shot yourself, series, release year
- Own / wish / duplicate states, with a count per series
- Trade list export as an image, to post or send to friends (no social login)
- A share card of the collection. That's how parents and kids spread this
ASO from day one: lead with the generic term in the name (squishy collection tracker), not the brand. Apple rejects apps that put someone else's trademark in the name, and NeeDoh is a trademark. Describe compatibility in the description instead. Check with the ASO tool which generic terms show up in autocomplete.
Why it might not work: Toy crazes end. The search interest has already fallen by half from its peak. The trademark rule also means you can't use the exact search term people type, which is why the six current apps rank where they do.
Verdict: build now and ship before December. Don't spend more than two weekends on it.
4. A family game-night buzzer with a scoreboard
The free Ultimate Buzzer launched in 2011, has 15,060 ratings and is still #1 for buzzer. Its paid version is still in the top-paid chart in the US and Germany. The design is old, but nobody has displaced it: 16 buzzer apps launched in 2025–26 and they have 178 ratings combined.
App Store autocomplete shows what people want the buzzer for: buzzer timer, buzzer: big red button sound. Google Trends' related queries add family feud buzzer and game show buzzer sound. This is game-night equipment, and game nights peak around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
MVP, no integrations:
- 2–4 player zones on one screen (a tabletop layout for an iPad lying flat), first touch locks the others out
- Classic sounds you recorded or licensed: buzz, ding, wrong answer, timer running out
- A team scoreboard with +1/−1 and a round timer
- Optional: phones as buzzers on the same Wi-Fi through Apple's MultipeerConnectivity, which is a system framework, not a third-party service
ASO from day one: game show buzzer, family feud buzzer and buzzer timer are all in autocomplete or Trends. The leader ranks #2–#4 for them with a 2011 design. Make the screenshots show a family at a table, not a single red button.
Why it might not work: The leader has 15,000 ratings and will be hard to dislodge for the bare "buzzer" term. Without the multi-zone or multi-phone angle, this is just another red button.
Verdict: build narrower: the multi-player game-night version, released before Thanksgiving.
5. A pocket magic kit of tricks that only work on a phone
Search for magic tricks in the US App Store and the top results are tiny. 52outs ranks #3 for magic tricks with six ratings, and The Stranger is near the top with 84. The search phrase is real: autocomplete returns magic tricks, card magic tricks, magic tricks free and magic tricks - learn & master. Google Trends for "magic tricks" in the US has been steady between 40 and 60 for five years, with a bump every December.
The paid charts show people will pay for the trick itself. In Italy, Calcolatrice Magica Pro (a calculator trick, launched in 2026) is #9 paid, Rising Card Magic Trick is #11 and Magic Joker 2 is #19 at €19.99. In France, Card2Phone is #18 paid. In the US, Card Now - Magic Business is #90. These apps are props: the phone does something impossible while the audience watches.
MVP, no integrations:
- 4–6 tricks that need nothing but the phone: a calculator that "predicts" a total, a card that rises out of the screen, a fake lock screen that shows the chosen card
- A practice mode with step-by-step instructions for each trick
- A secret input method (taps in screen corners) so the performer can control the reveal
- One price, no ads. A magician can't have an ad pop up mid-trick
ASO from day one: magic tricks and easy magic tricks for the name and subtitle; magic tricks for kids is a top related query in Google Trends. Localize into Italian and French early, because that's where the paid chart is most open to these apps.
Why it might not work: The search volume is modest; this is a steady niche, not a hit. Trick design is the real work. A trick that is easy to see through will bring 1-star reviews.
Verdict: build as a paid app, then add Italian and French.
Ukraine
Ukraine's Entertainment chart has the same streaming and AI apps at the top, but small local apps get in with very few ratings: a meme soundboard is in the top 100 with 58 ratings. Ukrainian-language party games are the main opportunity here. People search for them in Ukrainian, and the leaders are mostly older international apps that rank poorly for Ukrainian phrases. We only checked Ukrainian and English search terms.
6. Мафія: a narrator app in Ukrainian
Mafia is a staple of Ukrainian parties, and App Store autocomplete in Ukraine shows exactly what people want from an app: мафія ведучий (mafia narrator), мафія українською (mafia in Ukrainian), мафія для компанії (mafia for a group) and мафія карти (mafia cards). The narrator is the hard job at a real table, because someone has to run the night phase instead of playing.
The leader, Mafia: cards, has 1,076 ratings and ranks #1 for мафія, #4 for мафія ведучий and #5 for мафія українською. It isn't in the top 200 for мафія гра or мафія для компанії. Nine apps launched in 2025–26 and they have 14 ratings combined, so new apps haven't figured out how to compete yet. Google Trends for "мафія гра" in Ukraine is low-volume and noisy, but its top related query is clear: "мафія гра правила" (mafia game rules). People need the rules too.
MVP, no integrations:
- Role dealing on one phone: pass it around, tap to see your role, tap to hide
- A narrator script for the night phase read aloud by the built-in Ukrainian system voice (AVSpeechSynthesizer, on device), with timers
- Role sets for 6–20 players, including the common house variants
- Rules in plain Ukrainian inside the app, since that's what people search for on Google
ASO from day one: put мафія and ведучий in the name and гра для компанії українською in the subtitle. The leader doesn't cover the last two.
Why it might not work: Games doesn't have a chart a party app can reach in Ukraine; the top-100 is all big mobile games. Search is the only way in, and the audience is limited to one country.
Verdict: build. Small, steady, and the leader leaves two of the top search phrases open.
7. Шпигун: the impostor party game, Ukrainian-first
The impostor game (everyone gets a secret word except one player, who has to bluff) became a worldwide party trend in late 2025. In Ukraine it's called шпигун (spy), and autocomplete lists шпигун – гра для компанії (spy, a game for a group), шпигун українською and хто шпигун (who's the spy).
The leader, Spy: Find the Imposter, has 10,149 ratings and ranks #1 for шпигун and гра шпигун, but it isn't in the top 200 for шпигун українською. Twenty-seven of the 45 results launched in 2025–26, with 135 ratings combined. Lots of developers have built one, and none of them has taken off. A Ukrainian newcomer can, though: the Alias word game by Viacheslav Dudko launched in June 2026 with Ukrainian and English, has 225 ratings and ranks #2–#3 for its terms. Globally the impostor trend peaked in December 2025 and is now at 14% of that peak, so the next chance for a spike is this New Year's season.
MVP, no integrations:
- Word packs written in Ukrainian by a person, not machine-translated: everyday things, Ukrainian cities, food, films, school
- Pass-and-play on one phone for 3–12 players, with a discussion timer
- A "two spies" mode and a mode for kids
- Packs bundled in the app; new packs as a one-time purchase
ASO from day one: the open phrase is шпигун українською. Put шпигун in the name and гра для компанії українською in the subtitle.
Why it might not work: It's crowded: 27 recent apps means the idea is obvious. The trend is also past its peak worldwide. The Ukrainian word packs are what make your app different, so they have to be good.
Verdict: build, Ukrainian-first, and release by early December.
8. Правда чи дія with separate modes for couples and kids
A truth-or-dare app from 2016 is in Ukraine's top-free Entertainment chart. It ranks only #9 for the Ukrainian phrase правда чи дія and #12 for правда чи дія для пар (for couples). Autocomplete shows the two audiences clearly: для пар (for couples) and для дітей (for kids). Those are very different products, and a single app with a mild/spicy toggle serves neither well.
The newest attempts haven't gained traction: 14 launched in 2025–26 and they have 18 ratings combined. The Ukrainian-language one, Правда або Дія 18+ Українською, has 4. Google's related queries are all about content: "правда чи дія питання" (truth or dare questions) is the top one. People want good questions, and that's what an app should provide.
MVP, no integrations:
- Two modes that look different: "Для пар" and "Для дітей і родини" (for kids and family), plus a party mode
- 300+ questions and dares per mode, written in Ukrainian, with no repeats within a session
- Player names and turn order, a skip with a penalty
- A custom-questions editor saved on the device
ASO from day one: two options: one app per audience (правда чи дія для пар as the title) or one app with both phrases in the subtitle. The leader is #9 and #12, so both phrases are winnable.
Why it might not work: The kids' mode and the couples' mode can't share one age rating. Apple will rate the app for its most adult content, so a family version may need to be a separate app.
Verdict: build narrower: start with the couples version and add a family version as a separate app.
9. Кнопки меми: a Ukrainian meme soundboard
Two meme soundboards sit in Ukraine's top-free Entertainment chart: Meme Instants at #91 with 67 ratings and MemSound at #99 with 58. Being in the chart with so few ratings means the competition is weak. MemSound ranks #1 for кнопки меми and меми and #2 for меми звуки (meme sounds), and all three phrases are in autocomplete.
What's missing is local content. Neither of the two soundboards in the chart lists Ukrainian among its languages. A soundboard of Ukrainian internet culture (the phrases everyone quotes this year) is a different product, and the app becomes outdated if it isn't updated. Prank-sound apps show how big this category can be: OMG Prank App is #34 in the same chart with 1,433 Ukrainian ratings.
MVP, no integrations:
- A grid of buttons, favorites, and a search box, with all audio bundled in the app
- Home-screen widgets and an Action button shortcut through App Intents
- Share a sound as an audio file to any messenger through the system share sheet
- A monthly update with new sounds; the update itself is the marketing
ASO from day one: меми звуки and кнопки меми in the title and subtitle, українські меми in the description and screenshots.
Why it might not work: Copyright. Clips from TV, films and songs belong to someone. Record your own versions, get permission from creators, or use clips that are clearly free to use. Otherwise one complaint can take the app down.
Verdict: build, if you can solve the audio rights.
10. A meter for this month's meme
Potuzhnometr is a joke app: it "measures the meme levels of everything around you", built around потужно (powerful), a word that became a meme in Ukraine. It launched in June 2026 and reached #48 in the top-free Entertainment chart with 33 ratings. It ranks #1 for every version of the word.
Here's the catch, and it's the useful lesson. App Store autocomplete returns nothing for потужність. Ranking #1 there is ranking #1 in an empty room. The chart position came from people sharing the app because the meme was everywhere at the time, not from search. This kind of app works when you build it in days while the meme is at its peak and accept that it will fade.
MVP, no integrations:
- One screen, one big animated gauge, one punchline that changes with the reading
- Point the camera, get a "measurement": a screenshot-ready result card with the app name on it
- Ship in a week. After that, the meme will have moved on
ASO from day one: don't bother with keyword research; this lives on shares. Put the meme word in the name so the people who've heard about it can find it.
Why it might not work: By the time you read this, the meme in question is probably old. You need to catch the next one, and you can't plan for that.
Verdict: build only if you can ship within a week of a new meme. Otherwise skip.
Europe: Germany, France, Italy
"Europe" here means three App Stores, each with its own language and habits, so each idea names the country where the data supports it. Two of the five come from a pattern visible in all three charts: party and detective games that launched in 2025–26 reached the charts in several countries at once.
11. Germany: a digital score pad for dice and card nights
Germans play Kniffel (Yahtzee), Doppelkopf and Schafkopf at the kitchen table, and they keep score on paper pads. German App Store autocomplete shows that people want the digital version: kniffel block (Kniffel pad), kniffel spielzettel (score sheet), doppelkopf schreibblock, doppelkopf zählen (counting), schafkopf zähler (counter) and schafkopf-rechner (calculator).
The apps covering these phrases are small. ScoreSheets is #1 for kniffel block with 178 ratings and outside the top 200 for the other four phrases. Doppelkopf Schreibblock has 21 ratings, Schafkopf-Rechner has 252. The 2026 newcomers (Würfly, Kniffel Ultras, Punktezettel) have 44 ratings between them. Google Trends for "kniffel" rises every December, from 38 in October to 66 in December 2025, and the top related query is kniffel vorlage (Kniffel template): people are looking for the score sheet.
MVP, no integrations:
- Score pads for Kniffel-style dice, Doppelkopf and Schafkopf, each with the correct house rules and automatic totals
- Player names, a game history and a running season total for regular groups
- A large, high-contrast layout for older players and a phone lying on the table
- Optional digital dice with haptics, for when the cup goes missing
ASO from day one: Kniffel® is a registered trademark of Schmidt Spiele, so name the app with generic terms (Würfelblock, Spielzettel, Doppelkopf Schreibblock) and test which ones show up in autocomplete. Doppelkopf and Schafkopf are names of traditional games, not brands.
Why it might not work: Low ceiling. These are small German-only searches, so the realistic outcome is a steady side income, not a hit.
Verdict: build. Small, durable, and seasonal in your favor if you launch in November.
12. France, Italy, Germany: an offline cold-case detective game
Detective games where you read case files, compare statements and name the culprit have taken off in Europe in 2026. ColdTrace launched at the end of May and is now in the top-free Entertainment chart in Italy (#30), Germany (#48) and France (#84). It ranks #1 for jeu enquête criminelle (crime investigation game) and cold case in all three countries, and #1–#2 for enquête policière (police investigation). Snitchy, also from 2026, is #13 in France, and Stalkie is #65 in Italy.
The French search results show a wave in progress: 16 of the 46 results for "enquête" launched in 2025–26, and several are doing well (Storyva 345 ratings, Unlocked 106). That's both the proof and the warning. A detective game is mostly text, documents and images, so it needs no server. The work is in writing cases that are fair and satisfying to solve. You can't check demand for the French phrase in Google Trends, because a French TV show called Enquête Criminelle takes up all the results.
MVP, no integrations:
- Three complete cases at launch, each with 10–15 documents: statements, photos, a map, a timeline
- A pinboard where the player links clues, and a final accusation with a scored explanation
- Native French and Italian text from the start (these are the charts the genre is in)
- New cases as one-time purchases, bundled in updates
ASO from day one: enquête criminelle, cold case and jeu détective in French; gioco detective and caso irrisolto in Italian. ColdTrace holds #1 for the obvious terms, so aim for the theme of your cases (an era, a city, a type of crime).
Why it might not work: This is the most content-heavy idea in the list. An AI can help draft, but a case with a plot hole gets 1-star reviews. Sixteen recent competitors in France means the bar is rising.
Verdict: build only if you enjoy writing mysteries. Otherwise pass.
13. Italy, France, Spain: the impostor game with football players
The impostor game's biggest European hit is Splash, launched in 2025: #6 in Germany's top-free Entertainment chart with 226,152 German ratings, #21 in Italy. Going after the generic term is pointless. What's interesting is the most popular variant. In Italy, typing "impostor" in the App Store suggests impostor football first, and impostore calcio (football impostor) is fourth. In France the suggestions include imposteur football and imposteur foot.
The app at #1 for all of these in Italy, France and Spain is Impostor Football: English only, launched in February 2026, 60 Italian ratings. The other three football versions have 5, 0 and 0. So the top result for this phrase in three big football countries isn't even in their language. Google Trends shows when the impostor game peaks: "impostore" in Italy went from 14 in October 2025 to 66 in December 2025. The next Christmas season is the time to launch.
MVP, no integrations:
- Player packs by league: Serie A, Ligue 1, LaLiga, Premier League, legends. Names and positions only
- Pass-and-play for 3–15 players, with a timer and a vote
- Fully translated into Italian, French and Spanish, including the hints
- Packs bundled; a one-time purchase unlocks all leagues
ASO from day one: impostore calcio in the Italian title, imposteur foot in the French one, impostor fútbol in Spanish. The leader isn't localized, so a native listing has a real chance.
Why it might not work: Player names are factual and fine to use, but club logos, kits and player photos are licensed. Don't use them. The overall impostor trend is fading from its peak, so the football angle has to carry the app.
Verdict: build now, localized, and launch before December.
14. France: a jeu de soirée, if you already have an audience
France's party-game market is crowded at the top: Picolo has 46,694 French ratings, the Chouic truth-or-dare app 36,184, Insight 15,635, TOZ 14,534 (and #25 in the chart). New apps still get in. SOIRÉE2MALADE launched in April 2026 and is #36 in the top-free Entertainment chart. Sans Tact, from 2025, has 1,301 ratings.
The data shows how they got there, and it isn't search. SOIRÉE2MALADE is #39 for jeux de soirée and outside the top 200 for jeu de soirée. Look at what autocomplete suggests for "jeux de soirée": eight of the ten are names of specific apps (after, duoswitch, piment, bam, pintade, playpéro, insight, toz). People search for an app they've already seen somewhere else, mostly on TikTok and Instagram. Google Trends for "jeu de soirée" has fallen from 29 to 16 over five years.
MVP, no integrations:
- 8–10 mini-games in one app, each with intensity levels
- Group setup with names and a running scoreboard for the night
- French written by French speakers, with humor that sounds natural
ASO from day one: search won't launch this app. The name has to work as a brand people remember after seeing a video, because that's what they'll type.
Why it might not work: Without a content channel, this is the hardest idea on the list. The chart is held by apps with 10,000+ ratings, and generic search sends people to them.
Verdict: pass, unless you already make short videos with a French audience.
15. France, Italy, Germany: a countdown for one occasion
Countdown Star launched in 2012. Its ad-free paid version is still in the top-100 paid Entertainment chart in France, Italy and Germany, and the free version has 81,406 German ratings. The general "countdown" term belongs to apps like this, from 2012–2020, with tens of thousands of ratings.
Autocomplete shows that people want countdowns to one particular event: compte à rebours retraite (retirement), compte à rebours vacances and compte à rebours mariage (wedding) in France, countdown matrimonio in Italy, countdown urlaub (vacation) in Germany. The general apps treat all events the same. Recent apps haven't broken through: 13 of the 48 French results launched in 2025–26, with 29 ratings combined.
MVP, no integrations:
- One occasion per app. Retirement: working days left, holidays subtracted, a "days until freedom" widget
- WidgetKit widgets and a Live Activity, which are native and need no server
- A share card for milestones ("100 days to go"), which brings in new users
- A one-time unlock for themes, matching the paid model that already works here
ASO from day one: use the occasion as the name: Compte à rebours retraite, Countdown Matrimonio. A single-purpose name matches the search better than a general countdown app can.
Why it might not work: It's less playful than the other ideas, and each occasion is a small audience. Retirement in France is also a political topic; keep the tone light.
Verdict: build narrower: one occasion, one country, then copy the template for the next.
Three patterns across all 15
The chart doesn't always come from search. Ghost Science M3 is #3 in US paid but #69 for "spirit box". SOIRÉE2MALADE is #36 in France but outside the top 200 for "jeu de soirée". Potuzhnometr is #48 in Ukraine for a word nobody types into the App Store. All three are apps that look good in a short video. If your idea is one of these, plan the video before the code.
December matters more than launch week. Six of the ideas peak at the end of the year: "kniffel" rose from 38 to 66 in December 2025, "impostore" in Italy from 14 to 66, US "magic tricks" from 45 to 59, and "needoh advent" is a rising query, and "game show buzzer" peaked in December 2024. An app released in late November gets the holiday searches and a month of ratings before them. An app released in January waits eleven months.
Localization beats competing on the generic term. The #1 app for "impostore calcio" in Italy is in English. The 10,000-rating Spy leader isn't in the top 200 for "шпигун українською". The detective genre is in the charts in France and Italy, in the local language. In every one of these cases, a native-language listing is the cheapest advantage you can get.
Where to start
If you only build one, pick by how much time you have and which market you know. The safest are the ones where the leader leaves search phrases open and the work is mostly code: the German score pad (#11), the Ukrainian Mafia narrator (#6) and the football impostor game (#13). The best paid opportunities are the ghost-hunting kit (#2) and the magic kit (#5), if you're willing to make videos. The squishy tracker (#3) and the meme meter (#10) are time-limited: build them fast or don't build them. Skip the French party game (#14) unless you already have an audience there.
Before you write any code
- Type your main phrase into the App Store in the target country and write down the first ten suggestions. If there are none, you're looking at an empty room
- Search the phrase and count how many of the results launched in the last 18 months and how many ratings they have. Many launches with few ratings means you need a sharper angle than they had
- Check the current #1 for your three most important phrases. A leader in the top 3 for all of them is a much harder target than one that is missing for two
- Look up the Google Trends shape for the main term. If it peaks in December, set your release date now
- Check trademarks and audio rights before choosing a name or bundling sounds. NeeDoh, Kniffel, club logos and TV clips can all get an app rejected or removed
- Decide on one-time purchase or ads before you design the screens. Several of these ideas work only as paid apps, because ads would ruin the experience (a magic trick, a buzzer during a game)
Data pulled from live App Store charts, autocomplete and search results and from Google Trends via Pumf.it on October 17, 2026. Chart positions are from the iPhone top-free and top-paid Entertainment charts in each named country. Rating counts are for the country named (US unless noted). Search samples are single queries returning 33–50 apps each; they are representative, not a full census of the category. "Launched in 2025–26" counts are based on the release year in each listing. Google Trends values are relative to each term's own peak in each country over a rolling five-year window and are not comparable between terms or countries; some low-volume terms are too noisy to read. In Ukraine, only Ukrainian and English search terms were checked. This is a reading of public App Store data, not a critique of any app or developer named here. The named apps are used as working examples of what's possible for small developers.
